Polyethylene: We default to a heavy duty material, which is approximately 16.5 mils thick. The alternative is a light duty material, which is approximately 7.5 mils thick. We include hems reinforced with rope standard. We also reinforce your preferred attachments (grommets, D-rings) standard. Canvas: We default to 12oz canvas material, treated for water resistance (18oz after treatment). The primary alternative would be 10oz canvas material, treated for water resistance (15oz after treatment). Another option is to include a fire-retardant treatment for additional cost. We include hems reinforced with rope standard. We also reinforce your preferred attachments (grommets, D-rings) standard. Vinyl: We default to 22oz vinyl material. The alternative is 18oz vinyl material. We include hems reinforced with seatbelt-style webbing standard. We also reinforce your preferred attachments (grommets, D-rings) standard. What's the difference between finish size and cut size?Cut Size: the amount of material the factory cuts from a roll of raw material in order to manufacture a tarp Finish Size: the final dimensions of the finished product, after any necessary seams are added and hems are created Nominal Size: what a tarp is labeled with (at a store, for example) Let's say you want a tarp that is 6 feet by 8 feet, a fairly standard size for tarps. The factory should be able to cut a single piece off a roll of raw material to manufacture this. If you order this as a 6' x 8' cut size tarp, then the factory will cut a piece of raw material that is 6' x 8' exactly. They will add the hems, along with any reinforcements and attachments requested. Those hems will reduce the final size of the tarp. If we assume a hem requires approximately 2" of material to create, you may lose approximately 4" from each dimension, leaving you with a tarp of approximately 5'8" x 7'8" finish size. If you order this as a 6' x 8' finish size tarp, then the factory will cut a piece of raw material with allowances for the hems. Perhaps 6'4" x 8'4", based on our prior assumptions about the material needed to create a hem. Once the tarp is complete, you will have a tarp that actually measures 6' x 8'. But let's say you want a tarp that is 20 feet by 30 feet, another fairly standard size for tarps. 20 feet is far too wide for the factory to be able to manufacture it from a single piece cut from a roll of raw material. They will need to cut at least two pieces and fit them together with a seam (sewn or "heat sealed," depending on the material). If you order this as a 20' x 30' cut size tarp, then the factory will cut two or more pieces of raw material that together make 20' x 30' exactly. They will fit them together, then add the hems, along with any reinforcements and attachments requested. The seams and the hems will both reduce the final size of the tarp. If we assume a hem requires approximately 2" of material to create and a seam requires approximately 4" of material to create, you may lose approximately 4" from the length and 8" from the width, leaving you with a tarp of approximately 19'4" x 29'8" finish size. If you order this as a 20' x 30' finish size tarp, then the factory will cut two or more pieces of raw material with allowances for both the hems and any seams that are necessary. Perhaps pieces that together make 20'8" x 30'4", based on our prior assumptions about the material needed to create a hem and a seam. Once the tarp is complete, you will have a tarp that actually measures 20' x 30' If you're looking for precise measurements, go with finish size. If you only need a tarp approximately the size you're looking for, and you'd like to save a bit of money, go ahead and choose cut size. Many standard, ready-made, off-the-shelf tarps are manufactured cut size for a very specific reason: it's a more efficient way to use the rolls of raw material when making tarps en masse. The round numbers of the cut size are then used as the nominal size on the label for convenience. Consumers generally prefer to use round numbers when referring to product sizes. But note that, industry-wide, cut size products will (almost without exception) include an approximate finish size on the label as well.
